These fish are not fiction. They existed long before the people of Ki’ti’s Story, 75,000 BC. The fish were indigenous to Lake Dianchi in China. The 3.2 million year old Lake created by a fault running across the Yunnan Plateau was old when the People in the story arrived there. The fish are currently critically endangered. Two hundred snout trout live in Black Dragon Spring at the Lake and fewer golden line barbel in a well at the Buddhist Temple at the Lake. There is current effort to restore the Lake.
